What the Council does
As the tier of local government closest to you, Slaley Parish Council is made up of volunteer councillors dedicated to serving our community. Our main goal is to represent your interests, deliver essential local services, and continuously work to enhance the quality of life and well-being right here in Slaley.
How Slaley Parish Council Helps
Community Representation: We are your official local voice. We gather feedback from residents, identify local concerns and aspirations, and bring these to the attention of Northumberland County Council or other service providers like the police or health services. We also act as statutory consultees on planning applications, ensuring your views are considered.
Service Delivery: While we might not be as big as other councils, we have a range of powers to provide or support services that benefit our community. This includes things like:
Maintaining and managing public spaces such as the village green and other open areas.
Providing and looking after play areas and recreational facilities.
Helping managing community buildings like Slaley Commemoration Hall.
Providing and maintaining public amenities such as litter bins and bus shelters.
Supporting local events, festivals, and community initiatives.
Contributing to traffic calming measures and community safety schemes.
Looking after local footpaths and bridleways.
Improving Quality of Life: Beyond specific services, we actively work to make Slaley an even better place to live. This can involve:
Influencing long-term development policies for our parish.
Helping to secure funding for local community projects and groups through grants.
Lobbying other authorities on behalf of residents for improved services (e.g., highways, transport).
Engaging with residents through regular public meetings and working groups.
Championing Slaley's unique heritage and identity.
Financial Management: Slaley Parish Council raises funds through a "precept," a small portion of your Council Tax collected by Northumberland County Council. This money is then used to fund our activities and services for the parish. We also actively seek additional funding through grants.
